Single-Trip Travel Insurance

Ideal for occasional travelers, single-trip insurance covers individual trips, typically lasting up to 180 days. It’s cost-effective for infrequent travelers and easy to purchase online with prices going as low as $4/day for a 3-day trip to Southeast Asia.

Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance

Designed for frequent travelers, annual multi-trip plans cover multiple trips within a year. You only need to purchase it once for 12 months of coverage, making it a great option for those intending to make multiple long trips or short getaways abroad in a year.

Example: Joshua flies frequently in and out of the country for his business trips. As he works as a legal advisor, his job requires him to travel between Singapore and Thailand twice or once a month. Each trip will last for about a week. In this case, multi-trip travel insurance works best for him as he wouldn't have to keep getting travel insurance before every trip.

What is the Difference Between Individual and Family Travel Insurance Plans?

Individual travel insurance covers a single person, while family travel insurance covers multiple family members—typically you, your spouse, and children or grandchildren—under one policy, offering a cost-effective option for group travel.

What does travel insurance plans cover?

Travel insurance cover varies by plan but typically includes essential protection against unexpected events like trip cancellations, medical emergencies, lost belongings and more. Read on to discover the essential aspects of travel insurance coverage and what to consider when choosing a plan.

Overseas medical expenses

  • Claim for necessary and reasonable overseas medical costs incurred within a certain number of days of your trip (usually 90 days).
  • Coverage limit is specified according to the selected plan.
  • Some plans have tiered coverage limits for different age groups.

In-hospital cash overseas or allowance

  • Reimbursement in cash for hospital stays.
  • Commonly included in many plans, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation

  • Fundamental coverage for costs incurred during emergency medical evacuation and repatriation (including repatriation of mortal remains to Singapore).
  • Ensure someone contacts the insurer’s emergency service on your behalf, providing: your full name, trip dates, NRIC/FIN number, policy number, location, and contact number. As well as the nature of the emergency and required assistance.

Trip cancellation and interruption

  • Coverage for trip cancellations, postponements, delays, and interruptions.
  • May be applicable if you or relatives traveling with you are diagnosed with severe illness or injured before the departure date (subject to terms and conditions).

Baggage and personal belongings

  • Coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage and belongings.
  • Baggage delay compensation if your luggage is delayed.
  • Some providers can also offer separate coverage for gadgets like phones, laptops, cameras, etc.

Pre-existing conditions

  • Not commonly included in most plans, but available with certain insurers like MSIG, Income Insurance (formerly known as NTUC Income Travel Insurance, and Etiqa.

  • Provides coverage for overseas medical expenses related to pre-existing conditions.

Does Travel Insurance Cover Cancelled Flights?

Not always! While travel insurance includes “trip cancellation” coverage, claims are only valid for insured events like illness, accidents, or unforeseen events (riots, natural disasters). Be sure to check the policy for exclusions.

Flight Cancellation Due to Known Event

Flight cancellations due to events already publicly known at the time of ticket purchase are not covered, as you're expected to be aware of them. However, coverage applies if you bought your flights and insurance before the event was made public

Flight Cancellation with Refund / Replacement

If your flight was cancelled but you were put on a replacement flight, or your fare was refunded, you will not be able to make a travel insurance claim under the trip cancellation benefit. In general, travel insurance is only for unrecoverable costs. However, you may claim for trip delay benefits, such as an extra night's accommodation or extra meals.

You Cancelled Your Own Flight / Trip

Travel insurance typically covers events beyond your control. If you decide to cancel your trip, you generally can't claim anything unless your policy includes a "Cancellation for Any Reason" benefit. However, during pandemics or major events, airlines may waive cancellation penalties as a goodwill gesture. Always check with your airline and insurer for updated policies during such situations.

How do travel claims work?

Before you make a claim from your travel insurance provider, there are several important things to take note of, whether it is for claims related to your COVID-19 diagnosis, loss of baggage, trip cancellation, or other reasons. These include knowing what type of plan you purchased, when did the incident/illness occur (pre-trip, during-trip or post-trip), what belongings or items to claim for, and who are involved.

Step 1

Get your supporting documents ready

Most travel insurers require claims within 30 days. Submit via mail, WhatsApp, their app, or online portal to avoid policy breaches. Keep originals for 6 months in the event the travel insurance provider needs to sight them. Required documents often include personal info, medical reports, ownership proof, trip records, and reports (e.g., police, airline).
